KYP Policy — Know Your Partner

KYP is Rentilly's proprietary verification standard. It goes beyond identity checks to verify the person on the other side of your tenancy, and the property itself. Verification processes are handled by licensed verification bodies.

Last updated: 4 September 2026 · Governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria

01Why KYP exists

Most rental and property-sale fraud in Nigeria happens because nobody verified the counterparty. KYP verifies both sides of every tenancy and every sale before money moves, and keeps the record attached to the escrow transaction.

02Tier 1 — Identity

Identity verification is carried out by licensed verification bodies and identity verification providers approved to access the NIBSS Bank Verification Number database, the NIMC National Identity Database and other official records. Rentilly does not maintain these databases and relies on the verification result returned by the licensed provider.

  • BVN validation against the NIBSS Bank Verification Number database.
  • NIN validation against the NIMC National Identity Database.
  • Liveness selfie matched to the identity record.
  • Phone number ownership check by one-time password.

03Tier 2 — Landlord and property

  • Proof of ownership or written letting authority.
  • Review of title documents — Certificate of Occupancy, Deed of Assignment or Governor's Consent under the Land Use Act 1978.
  • Address confirmation and duplicate-listing checks across the platform.
  • Settlement bank account name matched to the verified identity.

04Tier 3 — Partner verification

  • CAC registration details for corporate partners under the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020.
  • Directors and beneficial owners screened for sanctions and adverse media.
  • Signed partner agreement setting out commission and conduct rules.

05Ongoing monitoring

Verification is not a one-off. Accounts are rescreened on material changes — new bank account, new device, unusual escrow volume — and periodically as required by the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022 and CBN customer due diligence rules.

06Fraud blacklist

Confirmed fraud results in permanent removal and an entry on the Rentilly blacklist, which blocks re-registration using the same BVN, NIN, device or bank account. Serious cases are reported to the EFCC and the Nigeria Police Force.

07Data handling

KYP data is processed under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 for the purposes of identity verification, fraud prevention and legal compliance only. It is never used for marketing and never sold. See the Privacy Policy for retention periods and your rights.

08Appeals

If a verification is declined or an account is blacklisted in error, you may appeal through Report Fraud or Contact Us. Appeals are reviewed within 7 business days and you will receive a written outcome.

KYP (Know Your Partner) is Rentilly's own standard. It incorporates, but is broader than, the regulatory customer due diligence performed by our licensed payment partners. Identity verification is performed by licensed verification bodies; Rentilly does not maintain the BVN, NIN or other government identity databases.
